Saturday, May 23 – Road Runners Fallen Officers Scholarship Fund Benefit Show at Carrolltown Center Mall, Eldersburg.  John Chance in his Monte Carlo, Butch Riley in his ’55 Pickup, Jim Riggs in the ’57 wagon and Ed Z in his ’56, participated in this very nice show along with about 250 other cars & trucks.  This was a really nice show. They had plenty of good food vendors and a few other vendors on hand.  At awards time, they gave out over 100 trophies.  Congratulations to Butch and Jim who took home very nice plaques!

SATURDAY, MAY 30  - After almost a week of rain, Saturday May 30 dawned bright and clear with a  promise of clear skies all day.  We arrived at Barefoot Bernies and got everything set up.  Many thanks to EZ for hauling the club trailer to the show and to John & Janet Stein for picking up the new speakers we rented for the day.

We had about 100 cars and trucks, along with a couple of nice motorcycles!  Barefoot Bernies/Cancun Cantina was more than generous in providing us with gift certificates and t-shirts to use as door prizes and providing the dash plaques.  HMCCC also donated some of our t-shirts for door prizes. Barefoot Bernies/Cancun Cantina donated a very nice neon Rolling Rocks sign that we auctioned off – congrats to Pat Kelly who is the owner of the new sign!

The Shriners brought out their little parade cars – both some new bright yellow ones and the older model T’s.  They paraded thru the parking lot several times and put on quite a show!  It was really great and everyone enjoyed it!

At about 3:30, we awarded three special awards, to three cars selected by the Shriners as the cars they would most like to take home.  Barefoot Bernies generously donated more gift certificates for these special awards.

One award went to Bill Cook’s 1963 Corvette
One award went to Ron Jones’ red 1934 Ford Coupe
One award went to Joe, Nancy & Julie Mecler’s 1955 Chevy

Bill Pompell of Hagerstown was the lucky winner of $206 in the 50/50.

When all the donations were added up, we were able to raise about $1,465 for the Shriners and the great work they do in their children’s hospitals.

Many thanks to all the HMCCC members who came out to help!  We had quite a nice crowd of members under the tents and in the parking lot – what a great day!

Tremendous thanks to Earl Chesley for arranging and chairing the event!  Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 24 when we’ll do another Cruise In at Barefoot Bernies!

After the show, some of us ate a great dinner at Barefoot Bernies and then cruised down to the Golden Gears Cruise Night at Whittier in Frederick.  It was a great evening to be out!

Sunday, May 31 – Late Great Chevys of Maryland Show at the Eldersburg WalMart – there were about 58 cars & trucks at the show.  Attending from HMCCC were Jack & Linda Flood in their ’56 Chevy; Ed Zimmerman in his ’55 race car; David Warfield in his ’64 Corvair and Jim & Linda Riggs in their ’57 wagon.  Linda drove her ’63 Olds convertible up – although it wasn’t entered in the show, it got looked over by several people!  Earl Chesley, Rick & Sharon Debow and Butch & Sissy stopped in for a visit and Frank Smith tried to bring his Hot Rod Pickup to the show, but had some technical difficulties on the way there.  He stopped in to visit nonetheless.

It was a beautiful day, and at awards time, Jim & Linda’s ’57 wagon and David Warfield’s ’64 Corvair received Top 25 Awards.  Jack & Linda Flood’s ’56 received the Best Modified Award.  Congrats!

June 6 & 7—Mason Dixon CCC Show at FSK Motel, Rte 50, Ocean City. Open to 1929-1972 Chevys.
It was a very dark and stormy morning when most of us set off for the Mason Dixon Classic Chevy Club weekend in Ocean City.  Fortunately, after Friday, the weather cleared off and the weekend was great.  We had perfect weather for our drive home on Monday.

A boatload of HMCCC members and family attended the show:
Rich & Lynn Hoff in their ’55; Joe, Nancy & Julie Mecler in their ’55; Jim & Linda Riggs in their ’63 Olds Cutlass Convertible; Butch & Sissy Riley in their Reddawg 57; Paul Schneider in his black ’55; Gary & Susan Shipley in their ’57 Farm Truck; Frank & Alice Smith with their ’48 Chevy Pickup; Gary & Teresa Stonesifer in their ’57 wagon; Ed & Marsha Z with his ’57 black convertible and her ’55 2 door hardtop; Barb Z with daughter Sherry in the ’66 Malibu convertible; Roy Marshall with his friend Tom in a Ford Pickup; Long John Schneider in his white ’56 sedan delivery; Chris H & Michelle in their ’55 Pickup; Marty DeBoy in his red ’64 Corvette.  And we had some members who didn’t bring a Classic – Earl & Jodi Chesley and family; Jack & Linda Flood; Rick & Sharon DeBow.  And some members who stopped in to say “hi!” at some point during the weekend - Don & Susan Nalley and Lou Cugle.   With such a large crowd there, I hope I didn’t forget anyone!

On Sunday, Chris Haczewski won the Men’s Fan Belt Toss and Sissy Riley won the Women’s Toilet Paper Toss.  Congrats!

This year, Mason Dixon Classic Chevy Club supported two charities – Fisher House - where the families of wounded veterans can stay while their loved one is recovering and Home of the Brave – a shelter for homeless veterans since 1996.

Ed Zimmerman conducted a fun and lively auction which raised $1,365 for the charities.

Heart of Maryland Classic Chevy Club won Club Participation, and we donated the money back to the charities.

Congrats to Butch & Sissy Riley who won Longest Distance and received a bit of cash to help pay for gas.

Congrats to Ed’s sister (and Barb’s daughter) Sherry, who won $229 in the 50/50 on Sunday.

AND DON’T FORGET – Jim Riggs is collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans for Ronald McDonald House. 1,280 pop tabs = 1 pound.  1 pound of pop tabs = 50 cents. Money collected from pop tabs last year = $6,194.20.  The money received from the pop tab program helps to defray the cost of operating a guest room – “a home away from home” for families of sick children.  This year, we were able to donate a heavy sack of pop top tabs – about 16.5 gallons!  Thanks to all who have brought their tabs to Jim!

June 5-7 – Ford Carlisle – John & Janet Stein attended – they had planned to go to All Ford Nationals at Carlisle on Friday, but it was raining.  Due to the weather, they arrived late and got to the show field about 10:00 Sat. morning.  It was a beautiful day and their class of cars was located on the hill above the show area.  (Which was crowded with MUSTANGS!!!).   They put up a tent and enjoyed the view and the breeze.  They drove home Sat. night and John returned to Carlisle on Sunday - good thing too as the Ford won first place in their class!!!  John got to park the car in the "winner's circle" for pictures.  All in all, it was a very nice show - well attended and lots of vendors.  Congrats to John & Janet!

June 5-7 – NSRA Street Rod Nats at York Expo Center. The report is that attendance and vendors were down dramatically this year and for next year they will open the show up to 1984 in hopes of increasing attendance.

Saturday, June 13 – Calvary Assembly of God Show, Walkersville - what a beautiful day for a car show and 100 cars, trucks and motorcycles showed up for a great show!  Frank Baker brought out his '57, Marsha Z brought her '55 Chevy, Dawn Z brought Marsha's '57, Jim Riggs brought out the '57 wagon, Linda Riggs brought her '63 Olds Cutlass convertible, Barb Z brought her Malibu convertible, Butch brought his '55 pickup, Sissy brought Reddawg '57 Chevy, John Stein brought the '57 Ford, Janet Stein brought the '57 Chevy, Jimmy & Mary Carroll let their son bring out their '57, John Chance brought his 2000 Monte Carlo, Mike Kefauver brought his 1951 English Ford and Frank Smith brought his '48 Chevy pickup.   Quite a nice showing of HMCCC members!

It was great to see Jimmy & Mary Carroll - it's been a while!
There were raffles, games, a moon bounce, music, great food and lots of activities.  A light sprinkle just before the awards ceremony had everyone putting up the windows, but it didn't last long.
At awards time, John Chance's Monte Carlo and Mike Kefauver's '51 English Ford took home Top 20 Awards.  Congratulations!

June 13–14 - For 25 years Kustom Kemps of America have been holding a show they call Sled Scene East in Biglerville, PA up near Gettysburg.  This year, their 26th, KKOA moved the event to Mason-Dixon Dragway.  How kool is that!

A KKOA event is different from a lot of the shows and cruise-ins because they seem to have more personality; the quirky nonconformity of the cars spills over onto the event itself.  There’s kind of a tongue-in-cheek vibe about the whole thing.  Like they’re saying, “yeah, we’re putting you on just a little.”

Mason-Dixon Dragway is a good venue for an event of this type because it provides a lot of room, amenities for entrants and spectators alike and the added dimension of racing.  The opportunity to add “run-what-ya-brung” drags was a big factor in KKOA’s decision to move to Mason-Dixon.

Several HMCCC members headed up to Boonsboro for the event.  Ed Zimmerman took both his Gasser and his ‘57 Convertible, Paul Schneider had his ‘55, as did Marvin & Linda Thomas.  Earl Chesley and Carroll Anderson were there, too.  EZ could not resist the chance to burn up that quarter mile and had an untried “junkyard motor” in the Gasser to add an element of suspense.   He said he was surprised and pleased with the 12.98 he turned on an easy run!

The show offered a huge variety of cars, from radical customs to rat rods to all-out drag cars.  There were cars that have been done for years, works-in-progress and cars on which it seemed the owner had given-up.  There was a Model T rat rod with no paint, no interior and no glass and a La Salle coupe that was as fine as it was radical.

KKOA President Jerry Titus wrote an editorial about the show for their website.  You can read it at:
