Cruisin’ Fools, What We’ve Done, Where We’ve Been!

If you’ve been someplace or done something that you’d like to share with other members, please feel free to email HMCCC at 567hmccc@comcast.net

AND DON’T FORGET – Jim Riggs is collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans for Ronald McDonald House. 1,280 pop tabs = 1 pound.  1 pound of pop tabs = 50 cents. Money collected from pop tabs last year = $6,194.20.  The money received from the pop tab program helps to defray the cost of operating a guest room – “a home away from home” for families of sick children.  This year, we were able to donate a heavy sack of pop top tabs – about 16.5 gallons!  Thanks to all who have brought their tabs to Jim!

June 26-28 – GM Carlisle - what a beautiful weekend!  Aside from a stormy blowup on Friday evening and being overcast on Sunday, the weather was delightful and we had a great time at GM Carlisle.  The "official" count from the Carlisle folks was 1,250 cars & trucks entered in the show.  There was a field of GTO's and a sea of Camaros, and everything in between!  What a great assortment!
Janet Stein drove up the '57 BelAir and received a Celebrity Pick from Scott Roberts, Camaro Regional Field Op Manager.  We know she would have also taken first in the Original class, but had to leave before the class was judged at about 5:00 pm on Saturday.  Jim & Linda Riggs drove the '57 210 4 door wagon, and took home first in the Modified class and received a Celebrity Pick from Chevy enthusiast Sara Shade of Carlisle.  The Carlisle Sentinel newspaper also did a nice article, including color photo, of Jim & Linda's car and Sara Shade.

Frank & Alice Smith also made the trip, but in everyday cars (see Frank's prez letter in the June newsletter for reasons why they couldn't bring their '48 pickup).  John Chance also stopped in on Saturday in the Monte Carlo.  Mike & Carol Drago were in the vendors section, and John Orcino stopped in on Sunday.

Saturday evening we got to enjoy a big time burnout contest - they had three minutes for a burnout.  It was won by 1996 Impala SS - he popped the tires and the rear brakes got so hot they caught fire!  The rotor got red hot!  Too cool!  There were 9 competitors, and most of them managed to block out the sun with tire smoke.  After the show the Riggs' and Smith's found themselves covered in black specs of tire - we couldn't wait to get back to the hotel and shower!  We also had to clean the interior of the '57 wagon where the specs rubbed off of us and onto the seats!

This year, on Saturday afternoon they gave away a high performance 462 Pontiac engine sponsored by Nitemare Performance.  On Sunday, a 1979 El Camino was given away.  The first ticket drawn was held by a very happy young man in the GTO club.  We also took a fun ride on the Rocket Car, walked the vendors section endlessly, and got to see some fantastic cars and trucks in the invitational display area.  There were also some 2010 Camaros and some green cars available for GM test drives.
It was a great show - mark your calendars for June 25-27, 2010!

Sunday, June 28 – Maranantha Church Show, Frederick – Ed & Marsha took the grandkids and report that the show was nice, especially for a family with kids.  They had about 75-100 cars, food, numerous inflatables for the kids, and a couple monster trucks.  One of the monster trucks put on a show, and even ended up flipping over on its side, and had to be pulled upright by the other one.  It was a fun time!

July 10 - Celebrate Damascus Parade – on Friday night, many members in ten classic vehicles participated in the parade.  Linda Riggs and Butch Riley led the line carrying the club banner, then Sissy in reddawg ’57, John Orcino in his ’56, Charlie Miller in his Studebaker, new members Dave Flanery and Lin Abell in their ’57, new member Lee Caplan in his ’55, Jim Riggs in the Olds convertible, Marsha Z and daughter Angie and grandkids in the ’55, John & Janet in their ’57 Chevy, Bob Terry and son in their classic Dodge,  bringing up the rear was Dave Desmarais in his ’63 Apache pickup.  Three of our vehicles had some overheating issues, and dropped out at various points in the parade.  After the parade we enjoyed some food at the activities grounds, then most of us split before the fireworks to avoid the traffic congestion.  It was a really nice parade, and the crowd lining the streets was amazing.

Saturday, July 11 – Celebrate Damascus Cruise In

It was an overcast, breezy and very pleasant day to have a cruise in!  Unfortunately, only 75 cars and trucks chose to participate in the new, relocated Celebrate Damascus Cruise In at the DVFD Activities Grounds.  But we didn’t let that deter our spirits!

We had some vendors – Amsoil, Soda Blasting & Mean Green Cleaners (www.masterofblaster.com), Russ & Penny Berkheimer had some parts to sell, Kevin Hines had some parts to sell, and Jim Baker of Show Car Photos (jim@showcarphotos.com) and his wife was selling beautiful jewelry.  A guy was there with his remote control race car track, and Sno Cones & More by Gayla was there.

After months of meetings, planning, preparation and work, we did very well financially, and collected $279 in donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The 50/50 was won by Jay Henley of Golden Gears, who won $92.50 and then generously gave a donation of $20 to the Alzheimers Association.

Many thanks to all who came out to help out!  We had plenty of help and it was greatly appreciated.  Special thanks to John & Janet who picked up the rented speakers from Makin’ Music and to Earl who returned them.  And to John who towed the trailer to the show and back!

Goodguys Columbus – Paul & Lynda Schneider took their black ’55 and Flo & Gary Garman took Juicy. There were over 6,000 cars & trucks and a great time was had!

July 14-19 – CCI Convention
Monday, July 13 the Riggs, Zimmerman’s, Smiths, Rileys and Steins got on the road at about 9:00 am.  We had a last minute change of plans on our route, and altered our route on the fly.  We finally arrived at the Days Inn in Fremont, OH at about 7:00 pm, with TB – Tired Butts!  Fortunately, the Days Inn in Fremont was fantastic – nice, quiet, clean with a huge parking lot for trailers and very friendly people.  They had a nice little restaurant so we didn’t have to go anywhere once we arrived.  We met up with Harry & Doris Jennings at the Days Inn and they traveled with us the rest of the way to Chicago.  Once we arrived in Chicago, we met up with the Flood’s and the Garman’s to complete our Heart of Maryland Classic Chevy Club members attending the convention.

Tuesday, July 14we finally arrived in Chicago at about 2:00 pm after braving horrendous traffic.  We all have pondered the question – who on earth thought it would be a good idea to have a convention in Chicago and why were we dumb enough to go along with the plan? Thank heavens no one broke down, although there were several accident near-misses.  Country mice in the big city!  We immediately decided that we have got to find a better way around Chicago to go home.

When we arrived at the Sheraton, the Z’s and the Smith’s had to wait a couple hours before their rooms were available, and we all hoped that the trip will get better.  Thank heavens we’re traveling in good company!  The Sheraton is a very nice hotel with large rooms, an expensive restaurant and nothing within close walking or driving distance.

Wednesday, July 15Registration and the raffles were held in the parking lot under a tent.  The weather was very nice.  We enjoyed a very nice trip to the Volo Car Museum.  I think it was one of the best and most fun museums we have ever been to!  They not only had a lot of antique cars, most of them were for sale!  Plus they had a fantastic collection of cars and trucks used in movies.  Very cool!  We lost the Z’s, the Smiths and Janet Stein in the large antique mall which was on the museum grounds.

George, one of the Greater Chicago Classic Chevy Club members, was our van driver and he was great – he gave us a lot of tips for getting around, stopped at WalMart for us and recommended some restaurants.  Later that evening, we went to the Palatine Inn Family Restaurant for a fantastic, inexpensive dinner.  For dessert, Ed & Butch ordered banana splits that were incredible!

Thursday, July 16, 2009our bus trip into Downtown Chicago, which we had nervously driven through on our way to the hotel.  The bus trip was fantastic and included stops at Lincoln Park Zoo, Millenium Park and the Navy Pier.  Chicago is a beautiful city and amazingly clean.  We enjoyed the bus trip and our views of the city.

When we returned to the hotel, we looked at cars for a while and then went to Gus’s Diner for dinner.

Friday, July 17, 2009 – was cleaning day.  The guys stayed and cleaned the cars, with some help from the gals and then the gals took off for the Mall in the afternoon, thanks to Harry & Doris for the use of their shopping Tahoe!  And the weather got very very chilly!  Everyone wished we had packed more long sleeves!

Saturday, July 18, 2009 – it was a beautiful day for Show & Shine.  Just a little cool, so it wasn’t so darn hot to judge the cars (the last several conventions had seen 90 degree plus judging days!).  Although we had some afternoon clouds, they passed and Show & Shine went great.  The Greater Chicago Classic Chevy Club had arranged for a very nice Women’s Oasis, and we got to do some great shopping.  Several members came home with some terrific jewelry, purses, and other neat stuff.  Congratulations to Marsha Z who won the American Girl doll raffle and to Sissy who won a nice necklace and Alice who won two very nice books.  Marsha also won a $250 gift certificate towards the purchase of a Vintage Air system, so watch for a/c in her ’57 soon!

Saturday night was the dance with the Ragtops and, as usual, HMCCC members danced until they tossed us out!  It was a great time and the band really rocked!

Sunday, July 18, 2009 – We got up early and got packed up for the trip home.  Then on to the awards breakfast.

  • Ed & Marsha had their ’55 Chevy BelAir in Cruisers Class.
  • John & Janet had their ’57 Chevy BelAir in Cruisers Class.
  • Frank & Alice didn’t have a Classic at the show.
  • Flo & Gary Garman had their ’55 Chevy – Juicy – in the Trailered Full Custom Sr Class and won First Place in Class with 995 points and a Platinum Certificate.
  • Butch & Sissy Riley had their ’55 Pickup in the ’55 Custom Sr Class and won First Place with 972 points and a Platinum Certificate.
  • Jack & Linda Flood had their ’56 Chevy in the Custom Sr Class and won First Place with 993 points and a Platinum Certificate.  Jack & Linda’s ’56 also won First Place in Junior Judging.
  • Harry & Doris Jennings had their ’57 Chevy in the Trailered Restored Sr Class and won Second Place with 947 points and a Silver Certificate.
  • Jim & Linda Riggs had their ’57 Chevy wagon in the Custom Sr Class and won First Place with 991 points and a Platinum Certificate.

The high point vehicle of the show was Wayne Mayberry’s Trailered Custom Sr Pickup with 999 points.

Congrats to all!

There were 222 registrants with 200 vehicles on the show field.

Flo Garman received special thanks from the host club for providing their Host Club T-Shirts.  They were a familiar obnoxious bright bright green!

Long Distance was won by a 1956 Chevy driven 2,200 miles from Seattle, with runners up coming from Texas (2,000 miles), Idaho (1,940 miles), Scottsdale (1,900 miles) and Denver (1,063 miles).

Hard Luck was won by Mark from Seattle in his 1956 Chevy – for his fuel pump and carb issues on the drive out.

There were 15 State Reps at the show.

Club Participation was shared by Central Indiana CCC and Heart of Maryland Classic Chevy Club, both with 7 Classics at the convention on the showfield.  Runners up were Blue Ribbon CCC (6); Canadian CCC (4); St. Louis CCC (4); Gem City Classics (4); Baltimore’s Best CCC (4); Chicago CCC (4); Tulsa CCC (2); Wisconsin CCC (1); Arkansas CCC (1).

Elizabeth and Emily Perry had a nice traveling lemonade stand on Saturday at Show & Shine and raised $78.90 for the American Cancer Society.

After the Awards Ceremony, we had our photo taken and left for home, spending Sunday night in Springfield, OH and arriving home late Monday evening.

Many thanks to the Greater Chicago Classic Chevy Club for showing us a terrific time!

On the trip out and home we traveled through Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.  Amazingly, we experienced no car problems on the trip! Sissy counted license tags from 40 different states. The total mileage on the Riggs ’57 wagon for the trip out and back was 1,622 miles and we averaged 16.67 mpg, which we thought was pretty good since we definitely don’t travel light!

Saturday, July 18 – HMCCC members were invited to attend the Golden Gears Car Club picnic.   Earl Chesley and Rick Parrish and Sue Dudley were able to attend.  Rick even drove his ’57!  It was a great time – with great food and great company.  Thanks to Golden Gears for the invitation!

Sunday, July 19 – how do they do it?  The very next day after their club picnic, Golden Gears hosted a car show at the Frederick NAPA at Worman’s Mill.  There were close to 100 cars there, and they had some great door prizes, including 5 gallon buckets filled with cleaning supplies!  Great Show!

Friday, July 24 – Congrats to Ron Waugh with his beautiful orange ’55 Chevy who won a top trophy at the Shrewsbury show.  Only 3 trophies were awarded, and Ron’s ’55 received one!
Saturday, July 25 – Happy Days Diner on Pulaski Highway – congrats to Ron Waugh whose orange ’55 Chevy won a Top 20 Award!
Saturday, July 25 - John & Janet Stein with their '57 Ford, Jim & Linda Riggs with their '57 wagon, Ed Z in his '35 Chevy, Marsha Z in her '55 Chevy and Butch & Sissy in their '55 Pickup, had their vehicles on display at the Frederick Historical Society's Jazz in the Garden event.  It was a very nice evening, although there was rain in the air. Scott Morrison, a major sponsor of the event, was also there enjoying the music and nice company.
Sunday, July 26 - Ed Z in his blue '55, Marsha Z in her blue '57, Butch & Sissy in their '55 pickup, John Orcino with both his '56 sedan and his black '56 wagon, had their vehicles at the Fast Lane Fabrications who in Jefferson to benefit the Children's Miracle Network, hosted by Golden Gears.  There were about 103 vehicles at the show and Frank Smith and Earl Chesley were there to enjoy the show.  Congrats to Ed Z who won the raffle for a set of wheels and tires.  Congrats to Ed Z, Marsha Z and Butch & Sissy who all took home Top 20 awards!
