2007 Fall Cruise Update
by Linda Thomas

This year’s Fall Cruise will be a 1-day trip October 13, to Bridgeville, Delaware to the annual Apple-Scrapple Festival.  We will leave the Mt. Airy Burger King at about 7:30am for the 2½ hour ride to Bridgeville.   Festivities end with a fireworks display after dark and we can be back in Mt. Airy shortly after midnight.  Bring lawn chairs, coolers etc. as this is, among other things, a car show.  Those looking to stay the night should consider hotels either in Dover, DE or Salisbury, MD as the nearest; each about 15-20 miles from the festival.

Members are encouraged to bring their “classics” to allow us “prime” parking at the on-site car show.  Anyone not able to bring their “classic” can make arrangements to ride with someone who is; those driving “classics”, please invite your friends to join you.

A brief history of the event:  16 years ago  Bridgeville began promoting the town and the agriculture industry in western Sussex County with a festival celebrating apples and scrapple on the second weekend in October.  Some of the best apples around are grown nearby and it’s hard to drive through Bridgeville during the summer and NOT notice the distinctive smell of scrapple being processed; so the Apple Scrapple Festival was born.  “Apple Scrapple” has grown from 2500 visitors in 1992 to over 25,000 now and has become a major fundraiser for local community organizations.

Festivities begin at 4:00 pm on Friday evening with the carnival, food court and street dance. Things start up again on Saturday morning with an “all you can eat” scrapple breakfast from 7:00 to 11:00 am.  The rest of the day is filled with carnival rides, kids’ games, scrapple chunkin’, scrapple carving, live entertainment, car show, tractor pull, trade show, two craft shows and any kind of food that you can imagine including apple fritters, scrapple sandwiches, oyster sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs, barbecue beef sandwiches, ice cream and much more. The Festival is handicapped accessible.

Be a part of all the excitement that IS the Apple Scrapple Festival!  There is something for all ages and all appetites at this exciting event, which begins at 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon and runs until the street dance is over on Saturday evening.  Anyone interested in attending this event should contact Linda Thomas at 301-865-3660 or lndatmas@aim.com prior to October 1, 2007 to sign up.
